Hints for collecting water samples
‘Grab’ samples are single samples collected at a specific spot in a short period of time, typically a few seconds. They represent a snapshot of the sampling area in both space and time.
‘Composite’ samples are obtained by combining multiple grab samples that have been collected over a period of time and/or different locations. They are more representative of the sampling area.
Collecting a sample for microbiological examination:
Keep the sample bottle closed until the sample is to be taken.
If the container contains preservative, do not rinse the container before taking the sample.
Let the water run for 2-3 minutes.
Reduce the water flow to prevent splashing.
Collect the sample, leaving at least 2.5cm space to allow mixing of the sample at the laboratory.
Take care to prevent contaminating the inside of the bottle or lid. Do not put the lid onto the ground.
Remove the lid only long enough to collect the sample.
Clearly label the bottle with date and sample name.
Keep sample on ice until it reaches the laboratory.
Collecting a sample for chemical and physical characteristics:
Ensure that the correct bottle is used for the parameters to be tested.
Completely fill the bottle with the water and replace the cap immediately.
Clean the outside of the bottle if necessary.
Keep sample chilled until it reaches the laboratory.
